Sristi Foundation Newsletter

Sristi Foundation Newsletter

Welcome to the 10th issue of the Sristi Foundation Newsletter. Sristi Foundation is working to provide education, training and support to individuals with intellectual disabilities in rural Tamil Nadu.

Over the past few months we have been very busy indeed! From welcoming visitors from all around the world, to opening our dairy farm via our day to day support for members.

Thank you, as always, to our donors, supporters, volunteers, members and staff. You make such a huge difference and your help, support and guidance is truly appreciated by all at Sristi!

Our Goal

We are working very hard to raise funding to build a suitable building for Sristi Special School, Farm Academy, kitchen, dining and training hall. The architects at Vadivam Architecture have designed a wonderful building. Now we need the funds to make it happen. Can you help? Get in touch!

Making Sristi Village Beautiful

A huge ‘thank you’ to Swiss artist Marion who spent several weeks at Sristi Village creating some beautiful art work. These striking designs really add to the Village and certainly help to make it feel like ‘home’.

Indian Teachers Day

In September we celebrated Indian Teachers Day, giving thanks to our excellent and dedicated teachers. We are very lucky to have such specialist educators at Sristi Foundation, always working hard to improve the educational experiences of our members and school children.

School Van

In our last newsletter we told you that we had successfully raised the funds for our school van. Well, it has arrived and the impact has been immediate. Our school has grown to 18 students! Thank you to National Trust, Government of India for supporting to run Sristi Special School. Also we thank Dr. Sasikala and Mr. Saurin Nanavati for their donation of our school van.

Orange House
Our volunteer house has had a makeover. No longer the ‘pink house’, now our hard-working volunteers can unwind and relax at the ‘orange house’!

Farm News

Dairy Farm
Our dairy farm is now operating! We had a lovely initiation ceremony with members, staff, friends and supporters to celebrate our wonderful dairy farm. As well as providing milk for members of our village, the dairy farm is a key step in helping to make Sristi Village fully sustainable. We are already selling some of our milk to locals, thus generating much needed income. In addition, we have also built a biogas plant, which has the capacity to produce 4 cubic metres of biogas each day!

Thank you to everyone who has made this possible. The dairy farm is central to Sristi Village as it provides an excellent source of income and centre for training for our members. We are very grateful to United way of Chennai and BoB 2016 for their financial support to build the dairy farm.

Good Spinach Project
We are starting to grow spinach at Sristi Village. Our Good Spinach Project will help to provide more nutritious food for our members and staff, as well as improve the quality of our soil. We have partnered with Naala Keerai (Good Greens!) and are thankful also to Ms. Trupti and friends for their support in this project.

Community Member: Venkadesh

Venkadesh is one of our members here in Sristi. He joined us approximately 2 years ago. He has adapted well to living in our community and fulfils his daily jobs responsibly. As we sell some of the milk of our Dairy Farm to nearby villages there has to be someone who transports the milk. Venkadesh was eager to volunteer for this role. We are so happy Venkadesh has an important and valuable role in our community.

Staff Member: Thatha

In our 10th Newsletter, we would like to dedicate a paragraph to our oldest and longest member: Thatha (grandfather). He has been a part of Sristi Village from the beginning. Thatha belongs to our most valued members, because he has over 50 years of experience in farming and even though, he is already 77 years old he is a great help. Every time there is any farm work to do he is ready to actively participate and he helps Shankar to manage the Dairy Farm and milk the cows. Sometimes it is a bit tough to convince him of our eco-friendly farming techniques, but in the end he only wants the best for Sristi. We want to show gratitude to this wonderful member of our Village, without whom life in Sristi would not be the same.

Volunteers: Malte & Louis

A huge ‘thank you’ to Louis and Malte, our German volunteers who spent a whole year at Sristi Village. Their excellent innovations (including our waste water management system), enthusiasm and love for Sristi Village were invaluable. We very much wish you the best for the future!

Visitors

We have been very lucky and have been inundated with volunteers and visitors over the past few months. We would like to say a huge ‘thank you’ to all of them, for dedicating their time and energy and contributing so much to Sristi Village. A special mention to:

  • The scouts of Nonnenbruch

  • M.A. Development Studies students from Azim Premji University in Bangalore

  • Architecture students from the Lucerne School of Engineering and Architecture in Switzerland

  • SOS Village Pondicherry

  • Emily, Pip, Alexandra, Anette, Lota & Jamima.

And Finally...

Karthik and Lakshmi are very happy to introduce the newest member of Sristi Village… their beautiful son Keerthi Visagan!
