Sristi Foundation Newsletter

Sristi Foundation Newsletter

Welcome to the 11th edition of the Sristi Foundation’s Newsletter.
Sristi Foundation is working to provide education, training and support to individuals with intellectual disabilities in rural Tamil Nadu.

We are very happy to inform you that Sristi Foundation is now registered under the Foreign Contribution Regulation Act. We are now authorized to receive overseas donations. For details of how to donate, please scroll to the bottom of this newsletter.

We would like to take this opportunity to extend our heartfelt thanks to our donors, supporters, volunteers, members and staff. You make such a huge difference and your help, support and guidance is truly appreciated by all at Sristi!

Our Focus

We are putting a lot of effort into the construction of our School Building and Farm Academy training institute. Our long dream of constructing an eco friendly farm school for children with intellectual and developmental disabilities is coming true! Our partner organization Stichting Zijn, (based in the Netherlands) has agreed to support us to build a school. This School will provide educational and farm based training to 100 people with disabilities in rural villages surrounded by Sristi.

Polestar Award

We want to express our sincere appreciation and thanks to the Polestar Foundation for recognizing Sristi Village with the Polestar Social Impact Award (under the 'Empowerment' category.) We are truly humbled and honored to receive this award..

We dedicate this award to all our supporters and volunteers for their commitment and continued support, without them it wouldn’t be possible.

Here is the video we produced about our work that impressed the judges:

School Furniture

In March, we received a wonderful donation of school furniture from the Rotary Club of Pondicherry mid town. A set of ten desks and benches for the students of Sristi School, which will be used frequently! Many thanks to all those who made this possible.

Sadguru Gnanananda National Fellowship

In November we received a very prestigious award from Dr. Kiran Bedi, Governor of Puducherry: the Sadguru Gnanananda National Fellowship.

We have enjoyed building a fruitful relationship with Dr. Kiran Bedi and are humbled by her interest and dedication to our project. Our members enthusiastically welcomed Dr. Kiran Bedi on her visits, gave a tour and explained our activities. Dr. Kiran Bedi was impressed by our simple lifestyle and connection with nature, and appreciated our eco-friendly construction and natural farming practices. She hailed Sristi village as a concept that should be replicated.

Farm News

Training

For the past four years we have been learning and practising natural farming at Sristi Village. Word has spread of our efforts and people from various sectors are interested to learn our farm practices. In April 2018 we are organising a 10 day training summit for those interested to learn from us. For more information, or to register your interest, please contact sristivillage@gmail.com

Zero budget farming
Over the past few months, we have started using Zero Budget Natural Farming at Sristi. Our members, staff, volunteers and our friends from Bihar have been working hard in the fields. Firstly the field was prepared and ploughed, we then had the task of creating beds and trenches, and the next step was planting various different fruit trees including papaya, pineapple and banana. We have also been learning how to make Jeevamirtham (a natural alternative to fertilizer).

Grounds Nuts
This year we planted groundnuts at Sristi Village. As well as being a great source of protein for our members, we have found they grow bountifully on our land!

Spinach Update
We recently initiated our Good Spinach (Nalla Kerai) project. We aim to grow up to 40 different verities of Spinach on our land. We have reaped a lot of Spinach and it is proving an excellent way for us to grow crops for our own consumption and to sell locally too.

We need your help

We need to rejuvenate and reconstruct two open wells at Sristi Village in order to store and get the regular supply of water for our drinking and farming purpose. This project is estimated to cost Rs. 10 lakh ($ 15000) and will greatly help with our future sustainability. Are you able to help? Do you know an organisation that would like to assist us in securing our water source for the village? If so, please get in touch.

Community Member: Nagaraj
Nagaraj (43) joined in our community in 2016. Due to difficulties with his family, he lived on the street for many years. Since joining our community, it is great to see that he is slowly and steadily transforming his life to become active member of Sristi Village. He is involved in all our activities from farming, construction, cooking and (recently) milking our cows. We are very happy with his progress. His dream is to start his own vegetable shop.
Staff Member: Muthu

Mr. G. Muthukrishnan, Principal of Sristi Special School, received a Child Friendly Teacher Award from Trust for Youth and Child Leadership, Puducherry. We would like to extend our hearty 'thanks' to Muthu for all his hard work to ensure the best education for our members and children.
